Southern Comfort The definition for a honky tonk is “a cheap or disreputable bar, club, or dance hall, typically where country music is played”. No place better embraced this description than Southern Comfort, a restaurant and lounge south of Atlanta. The stage was set driving south on Moreland as you passed Striker’s Motorcycle club, Foxy Lady Lounge and Club Scorpion. You only knew you had reached your destination when you caught sight of a number of big rigs under a humble sign. It was a dive bar with a fantastic range of people, where folks came to dance, sing and forget their troubles, open for over thirty years. Inside those smoky rooms, I found some of the best characters Atlanta had to offer and the patrons found a place to belong, if for only a night. Piñon Canyon In 1983, the United States army established an army base in southeastern Colorado with land acquired through purchase and eminent domain. The army promised they would never return for more land but in 2006 they began the process of expanding the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site by nearly half a million acres. Citizens that were displaced the first time were being threatened again. Cattle ranches surround the base many of which have been passed down from generation to generation, including my own family’s ranch. A grassroot effort to stop the expansion of an army base I was struck by how the Army only talked about the acreage, never the people and so I worked with local grassroots organization, the Piñon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition (PCEOC), to photograph the land owners on the very land they feared losing. My work provided visual support to PCEOC’s campaign, “Not 4 Sale”. To this day the communities of southeastern Colorado has been able to hold off expansion, but continue to remain vigilant. About Kaylinn Hi. My name is Kaylinn. I was raised on a ranch in Colorado and now my home is in Atlanta. I’m a little bit country, and I hope, a little bit rock and roll. My country upbringing made me understand the importance of community and trained me to be a fantastic problem solver. When you’re 60 miles from resources, you learn how to plan and how to get yourself out of a bind. Atlanta has given me the opportunity to learn from some of the best and then connected me to communities that have become, crew, clients, and often friends. I’m interested in editorial work that explores contrasts, family dynamics, and the needs of rural areas. I love working with companies highlighting their product or service through the people doing the work or the story that brought it to be. I also specialize in people that hate getting their photo taken if what you seek is a professional portrait. If any of these fit the bill or you just need help finding the story, I’d love to talk about it. My personal projects are my own struggle to understand and be understood.
