Behind the Scenes - When the Bubble Breaks

I started this project to work on something my coach, Danny Ghitis, and I had talked about: a willingness to play. The whole point was to have fun. But after seeing what came out of that play, I realized it could be a good entry point for a bigger conversation — water conservation. So I kept going...
These photos & videos show you what it's like behind the scenes as we worked on creating the images in rural Colorado & Georgia. Each area offered different scenes with a connective thread, but to showcase those, we had to overcome different obstacles. Learning how to work with the bubbles can be the most challenging if I get to rigid in my expectations. So it's important to enjoy the process and focus more on play than outcome.

This has been a family affair from the start. My main bubble wrangler is my husband, Andy — and he's a master at it. He reads the wind, judges its direction and intensity, and knows exactly how to talk me down when I get too rigid about what I want. (Yes, we are taking photos of bubbles, which requires both flexibility and strategy.) He'll also give me the shirt off his back when the sand fleas start chewing me up. Sounds glamorous, right? It isn't, always — but there are moments of real laughter, and memories that stick.
Along the way, my mom and my sister, Kelsey, have taken their turns wrangling bubbles for me. Once the photo sessions wrap, my dad and brother try their hand at slinging bubbles into the wind too.
I've felt the weight that water's absence creates, and I've carried that weight with my family before. So it means something to have moments like these instead — ones spent laughing and giggling while we make bubbles together.
